#TIPTUESDAY - HAY BALING SAFETY

We're finally seeing summer sunshine and beautiful weather - which means hay season is in full swing across Iowa. Keep these safety tips in mind to prevent farm accidents:

PTO SECURITY

Keep all hands, feet, limbs, and other objects clear of the baler and PTO when the machine is engaged. Most pieces of machinery are equipped with PTO shields to protect operators, but it's always best to steer clear of all moving equipment.

BALER SAFETY EQUIPMENT

Make sure all balers in operation are equipped with slow moving vehicle (SMV) signs and fire extinguishers. This helps protect operators both in the field and on the road.

PROPERLY SECURE BALES

When moving bales on public roadways, it's best to secure them to the hay trailer with straps or other tie-downs. If your trailer is larger than most other vehicles and implements on the road, you may consider adding an oversize load banner or marker.

BE AWARE OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS

Always be aware of your surroundings while baling hay. Changes in terrain, animals, other operators, and other equipment can all become dangerous in just a few seconds.
